Following on from our racing round-up up last week, we have some rider spotlights for you! Find out what some of our members have been doing this season 👌

DCC racing round up:

It was a great season for our racers, with riders competing over a number of different disciplines. Notable highlights were 5 members obtaining their 2nd category licence, accumulating more than 40 points in a single season. 3 members qualifying for various world championship events next year!

Some mentions below, from those that have contacted me with their racing this year. Apologies if you are not mentioned, but its only because I don’t know about it!

Crit racing 🚴🚴‍♀️🚴🚴‍♀️

Jamie Mackenzie, George Batchelor, and Connor Backhouse, all getting more than 40 points each for Dorking CC and their 2nd category licences. Joseph Bacon and Nadine Ockmeke as gaining their 2nd category licences (although racing for other teams). In total Dorking accumulated 129 points, the largest total by some margin for more than 15 years! Podium finishes from most who raced this year too.

Gravel 🚵‍♀️🚵

Richard and Caroline have both qualified for the Gravel World Championships in Netherlands next year in their respective categories. Caroline winning her qualifier in Wales! Gerry, has narrowly missed out on qualification scoring excellent 5th and 12th place finishes.

Multi discipline 🚴🚴‍♀️🏊‍♀️🏊🏃‍♀️🏃

We have also had success across a range of other events too. Our very own chairman, Neil, qualifying for the off-road duathlon world championships, Liz O’Connor qualified for not one but two world championship events!! This will see her competing in short course and an Ironman length event across the globe.

Both Wendy Scott and Sara Barry competed in 70.3 and half Ironman events, respectively.

Long distance 🚴🚴‍♀️🛣️🚴🚴‍♀️

Finally and equally as impressive, JP rode from London to Edinburgh, before turning around and riding back to London!

Suzanne, founder of Lifestyle Health & Fitness, will be running a two hour workshop to discuss cycling, women’s health, nutrition and the menopause.

As a menopause coach, she takes a holistic approach, addressing the physical, emotional and hormonal aspects of the menopause.

🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️ It has been a great start to the racing season for Dorking CC with results across both 4th cat and 3rd cat categories for our members! Special mentions to:

@mark_s_hawkins with an 8th and 3rd place - only a few points off his 3rd cat licence in his first season!

@geobatchy making a comeback to DCC and scoring early with two 7th places and a 9th in the 3rds.

@cogsandcodes opening his account with a 6th and then 8th place in the 3rds.

@acr_cycling bagging a 3rd place at Goodwood this week after narrowly missing out on points last week.

@de_nads netting a 5th place and then one better this week in 4th!

@geocooke123 has made his 4th cat debut with more to come.

Dorking CC (East Surrey) HARDRIDERS TIME TRIAL returns for its 58th running on Sunday 16th March With past winners including Sean Yates, Michael Hutchinson & Zeb Kyffin, this has always been a popular early season test. An altered course this year with an improved road surface - a rolling 17.5mile route. Separate competitions for Road bikes and TT bikes. Equal prize money for Mens and Womens competition.

“At 17.02 last Saturday Mick Webber, Glenn Cornish and myself rolled into John o Groats following our 993 mile and 58400ft ride from Lands End. It was not a particularly heroic ride, certainly compared to the achievements of other Club members, but it was a sufficient challenge for us old uns. It was only achievable through our training rides over the previous 12 months and we would like to thank anyone and everyone that participated in any of those rides and encouraged, advised and supported us along the way - great job”

Huge kudos to Mike, Mick and Glenn for completing the iconic LEJOG in style and with the sunshine ☀️

First go at a Team Time Trial yesterday. We (Dorking) finished 19th on a tough evening of rain and high winds. We all had a lot of fun (in a usual type 2 kind of way)!

Big thanks to @rcrfatcreations for putting on a great event.

Congratulations to @surreyhillscycleworks on 13th place and Simon Harber racing in a mixed group of Cat 4s who finished 27th. @alexdowsett finished 1st with a solo effort on a TT bike - that must have been hairy on some of the corners!

We are getting a lot of Dorking riders at racing events this year which is great to see. If you fancy giving it a go please do get in touch! 📧

Second round of RCR Goodwood series this week saw DCC member Nadine Oehmcke finish 4th in the Women's E1234 cat race - her first ever road race - and just 2 days after completing the Fred Whitton Sportive (prob. not the best warm-up for a road race!)
Nadine was also the first 4th Cat rider over the line

Top 20 finishes also for Joseph Bacon in the Men's Cat 3 & Simon Harper in the Cat 4 race

We have an exciting new initiative being driven by two club members, recently qualified as British Cycling coaches.

We are running a bi-weekly series of Monday evening sessions through the next two months at Rykas Car Park starting on 20th May. Spring has finally arrived and it marks the return of the DCC Time Trial Championship.

The Championship consists of seven events between April and September with winners in the female, male and veteran categories.

The planned events in 2024 are:
1. Hard Riders- Date TBC due to roadworks
2. Virtual TT no. 1- June
3. Box Hill TT- 9th June
4. Northwood Paragon Interclub TT- 26th June
5. Virtual TT no. 2- July
6. Virtual TT no. 3- August
7. Horsham & Cranleigh Interclub TT- 14th September

You do not need to have a time trial bike to take part as standard road bikes are fine and have their own categories in some of the events.

All ages and abilities are warmly welcome to take part.
